Quick answer: an API platform versus an operating workspace

Gupshup self-serve: evaluate it if developers will integrate WhatsApp messages into an existing system, own webhooks, build lead logic and operate the user interface. WATI: evaluate it if staff need a ready-made inbox, campaigns, assignment, automation and support workflows with less custom code. Neither is automatically the cheapest option once implementation and messaging volume are counted.

“Gupshup vs WATI” is not a simple feature-count contest. Gupshup also has broader enterprise messaging products, while WATI has tools that go beyond a WhatsApp inbox. This guide compares Gupshup WhatsApp self-serve API with WATI's published WhatsApp business plans. If you are seeking custom enterprise contracts, get a separate quote for both.

Scope: We do not have a negotiated enterprise quote or a hands-on latency benchmark for either vendor. A price pulled from an affiliate site may include old Meta rates, so the primary sources below take precedence.

Gupshup vs WATI side-by-side: what a buyer really gets

Primary formatDeveloper-facing API, webhook and WhatsApp account setupHosted team inbox and campaign/workflow interface
Billing modelPublished pay-as-you-use message charges and Meta charges; no monthly self-serve commitment in docsSubscription + destination/message fees + chosen add-ons; India PAYG option also documented
Team inboxBuild or integrate an inbox; do not assume APIs equal staffed operations softwareShared inbox, assignments and reporting available by plan

The table intentionally does not list an “all-inclusive ₹ per message” winner. Whether customer service replies, marketing templates and media count in each component differs and policies change. Pricing must be modeled on real categories and markets.

What does Gupshup actually charge?

Gupshup's public self-serve pricing page lists US$0.001 as its standard per-message fee alongside applicable WhatsApp/Meta charges. Its self-serve getting-started docs say there is no monthly subscription commitment for that setup. These statements describe the published self-serve model, not all negotiated enterprise contracts or every specialized message type.

There is an important 2026 caveat: Gupshup's January 2026 update adds a 6% markup to the WhatsApp marketing fee for some Cloud API marketing traffic that is not routed through MM Lite. Do not apply that additional percentage to every customer-service message; check the account's routing and the actual invoice.

Cost model: applicable Gupshup platform charges + applicable Meta/WhatsApp message charges + custom development and ongoing operations. A nominal API rate does not pay for the developer who writes your sales dashboard, permissions or error handling.

WATI pricing: subscription, PAYG, message charges and add-ons

WATI's official pricing lists Growth, Pro and Business plans. Growth includes three users and 1,000 free automation triggers per month; Pro lists five users, 2,000 triggers and additional capabilities; Business lists five users and 5,000 triggers plus higher integration and operating limits. WATI lists separate rates for messaging and certain AI/add-on features.

India-specific nuance: WATI's July 2026 PAYG comparison explicitly says a Pay-as-you-go option exists for eligible customers in India. Therefore it is inaccurate to claim WATI always requires a fixed monthly plan. Check eligibility, 90-day credit validity and whether PAYG supports the templates and workflows you need.

WATI's own billing explainer separates subscription, messaging and optional add-ons. If you need Astra AI Agents, ask for its distinct quote rather than assuming the first Growth price includes autonomous sales qualification.

A fair cost calculation using the same workload

Imagine a fictional service business with 2,000 customer conversations, four operators, 800 marketing templates and two WhatsApp numbers per month. Do not multiply all 2,000 conversations by one invented flat rate; first split messages into categories and destinations, then account for each provider's charges.

  1. Get the Meta baseline. Count billable messages by category and recipient country using Meta's current rate card.
  2. Price Gupshup. Include the relevant platform fee, any marketing-routing surcharge, four operators' inbox/software costs and custom development.
  3. Price WATI. Choose a plan that can handle four users and two numbers; add messaging, AI features, required automation triggers and any seat/number add-on.
  4. Compare one-year total cost. Include onboarding, developer support, downtime contingencies, taxes and the possibility that annual discounts require upfront commitment.

This exercise is more honest than a rupee “winner” without knowing your mix of marketing, utility, authentication and service messages.

Three real-world selection scenarios

A small property agency needs quick qualification

If the goal is to capture enquiries, ask budget and location, show only verified properties and hand the context to a salesperson, you need AI qualification and a sales UI. WATI can be evaluated for its operational tools; Gupshup can be a building block if the agency has engineering support. A narrower product such as GetClosifi's AI Sales Employee approach is another possible category, but it is not a substitute for WATI's broad campaigns.

An ecommerce team sends campaign templates daily

WATI's campaign screens, segmentation and operator inbox may reduce implementation effort. Gupshup becomes attractive if the store already has a custom CRM and wants engineers to manage messaging events and templates. In either case the cost depends heavily on destination and template mix.

A technology company needs WhatsApp inside its app

Direct API control and webhooks can matter more than a polished external dashboard. Gupshup's self-serve/API workflow is closer to that technical architecture; compare error handling, security, delivery logs and rate limits before signing.

Before switching: eight questions for both providers

  1. Who owns your Meta Business Portfolio and WhatsApp Business Account?
  2. Does your existing WhatsApp number qualify for the proposed migration or coexistence path?
  3. Which templates, opt-ins, contacts and conversation records can be migrated?
  4. What exactly counts as a chargeable message for your account?
  5. What happens if a webhook or API call fails or sends a duplicate?
  6. Who maintains conversation history and customer/owner access controls?
  7. How are AI actions, handoff and human approvals handled in the relevant tier?
  8. What does cancelling or downgrading do to your number, records and workflows?

Gupshup vs WATI: frequently asked questions

Is Gupshup cheaper than WATI?

It can be cheaper at the platform-fee level for a team that already owns the software and development work. A team needing a staffed inbox may spend more building those features. Compare total one-year costs using the same messages, channels and users.

Does WATI have a PAYG plan in India?

WATI's July 2026 documentation says it offers PAYG to eligible India-based customers. Check included features and credit terms before assuming it matches Growth.

Does Gupshup include a ready-made CRM?

The self-serve WhatsApp API does not by itself replace a finished CRM. Gupshup has a broader product portfolio, so ask which specific product and package is being quoted.

Can either platform send any marketing message?

No. Both depend on Meta platform policies, permission/opt-in, template approval and relevant pricing. Neither can bypass recipient consent or account quality restrictions.
